PapaBearPipes by Tim Beaumont Smooth Anse Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Out of stock

PapaBearPipes are made by North American artisan Tim Beaumont. Beaumont has been making pipes since 2018, cultivating a unique style that isn’t afraid to mix and match design elements and to create something completely out of the ordinary.

The Anse, or Devil Anse, is a very traditional shape, though one that experienced a surge in popularity owing to its cameo in the 1975 Western Hatfields & McCoys. Nevertheless, it is a genuine classic in the world of briar pipes, likely taking its signature, sharply canted figure from the clays that preceded it. Of course, when Tim Beaumont makes a Devil Anse, it’s a given that he’s going to put his own, unmistakable spin on it. This one actually reminded me of the early post-war Danish pipe makers, especially artisans like Poul Rasmussen and Emil Chonowitsch, owing to its classical-yet-subtly-modern leanings. It’s beautifully carved, with the briar’s flame grain following the bowl’s cant perfectly, and employs a very unique use of a slightly flared, fantail design for its hand cut ebonite stem. As an Anse, it’s also a genuine featherweight, making it perfectly suited for clenching while pondering what to do about one’s pesky neighbors.
