Description
Papa Bear’s Pipes are made by North American artisan Tim Beaumont. Beaumont has been making pipes since 2018, cultivating a unique style that isn’t afraid to mix and match design elements and to create something completely out of the ordinary.
One of the great appeals of Danish shapes is how organic they are; how naturally they seem to flow from shank, to bowl, to rim, and so on. But if you really look at nature, you find that things that looked perfectly orderly at first do in fact have a little chaos to them. One way this is expressed is through asymmetry, and the more complex a natural being is, the greater the number of asymmetries—great and small—it harbors. Pipe makers in the Danish vein tapped into this notion from the 1970s onward, and the pipe makers they inspired continue to explore the possibilities of such designs. This Dublin from Tim Beaumont, for example, leans into the wave-like shaping of high-grades in 1980s and ’90s Denmark and Japan, following the natural, flowing patterns of the briar as they rise from the center to the edge of the burl.
