Papa Bear’s Pipes are made by North American artisan Tim Beaumont. Beaumont has been making pipes since 2018, cultivating a unique style that isn’t afraid to mix and match design elements and to create something completely out of the ordinary.
In a continuation of his ongoing Danish streak, this particular pipe from Tim Beaumont turns its attention to the apple shapes that have become a great fixture in post-war pipe making. Employing a similar approach to shaping as figures such as Hans “Former” Nielsen and Tom Eltang, Beaumont’s rendition is slightly squat, more than slightly bulbous, while also being compact and a comfortable clencher. Beaumont departs somewhat from the Danish tradition in finishing, keeping the excellent, ring grain sandblast but adding a subtle burgundy contrast stain, whose tiger-stripe patterns create a mesh effect with the briar. Another addition more in Beaumont’s wheelhouse is through his use of a black and tan accent combination at the pipe’s shank end, along with its camouflage cumberland stem.
