Moretti 2018 XL Rusticated Freehand Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
The Moretti make was originally founded by Igino Moretti in 1968, in the small, but historic, Italian town of Recanati. Igino Moretti had previously been a craftsman at Hully Briar, one of the many pipe factories that had held a presence in Recanati since the 19th century. After departing Hully and taking a brief hiatus from pipe making, Igino Moretti created his own brand, Moretti Recanati, which produced pipes under its own name and as a contractor for other brands requiring high-quality Italian pipes.
In more recent decades, Moretti Recanati was inherited by Igino Moretti’s son in law, Marco Biagini, who later simplified the name of the brand to “Moretti.” Today, Moretti pipes are made by hand by Biagini in his workshop, which is situated just across the street from what was once the home one of Italy’s most famous writers, the Recanati Romanticist Giacomo Leopardi.
It is no secret that Marco Biagini likes large pipes, with the largest of his pipes being about the same length as that between one’s fingers and one’s elbow. This one is not quite so massive, but it’s still a good-sized piece. A freehand Dublin more in the Italian than Danish style, yet also dressed in a partial rustication closer to stonework than sea coral, the pipe is finished in in a warm, natural blonde finish that contrasts beautifully with the pipe’s jet-black stem. Even for a rusticated Italian pipe, it’s nicely out of the ordinary, an achievement that Biagini is quite consistent at at attaining.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, having come from a lot of new old stock pipes from a shop closure in Europe.
