Description

Much like the MBSD Meerschaum Silver and Silver Cap lines, the Double Silver is comprised exclusively of sterling silver-mounted meerschaum. But, as the name suggests, Double Silver pipes are mounted not once, but twice. Each features a sterling silver cap at its rim, protecting the bowl and chamber from slips of the flame and lava build-up, as well as a sterling silver fitment at the shank end, typically in the form of an army mount. Each is made using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish block meerschaum found on our other various meerschaum lines, but with even more finery than any of the meers we’ve offered thus far.

Long-time visitors to MBSD Pipes will know how much I enjoy blending various shapes and styles for our meerschaum pipe designs, and that this is especially true for unusual, or obscure, shapes from the history of briar pipes. Stack, or chimney, shapes are a notable fixture in contemporary artisan pipes, particularly in the American scene, from the “Brow Burner” designs of Bill Shalosky to the unique, pencil-shank “Scottie” variation of Scottie Piersel. With this meerschaum rendition, the inspiration was more of a deep cut, being—at least in form—a Danish design. Back in the 1960s, legendary Danish pipe workshop Pibe-Dan (later known as Pipe Dan) had many a stack shape in its catalog, one of which was, oddly enough, called the “American.” That’s the story of this pipe: an “American” pipe originally conceived in Denmark and carved in Turkey. The finishing is more distinctive, on the other hand, and quite appropriate, with a brickwork motif running up the pipe’s tall bowl. As another extra addition, this pipe also features a reverse calabash system in its shank, which should provide an even cooler, drier smoke than a standard-bore meerschaum pipe.
