Description

L’Anatra pipes are made by the artisan duo Massimo Palazzi and Andrea Pascucci in northern Italy’s Pesaro region. Those with some familiarity with Italian pipes will likely recognize that particular region, as it is the home of what has come to be known as the “Pesaro School” of high-grade pipe making. Through its close network of artisans and workshops, Pesaro has been an epicenter for some of the finest pipes in Europe, including those of Mastro de Paja, Ser Jacopo, Le Nuvole, and—of course—L’Anatra.

Like many of their contemporaries in the Italian workshop scene, Massimo Palazzi and Andrea Pascucci’s portfolio includes pipes which are larger than the average briar. Also much like their contemporaries, Massimo Palazzi and Andrea Pascucci will, on occasion, create a L’Anatra pipe that is even larger than their more typical oversized offerings, for which it will receive a special designation: Gigante. In this instance, that designation is especially appropriate. At nearly 8 inches in length and with a truly towering bowl, the pipe is a genuine magnum. In fact, it is even larger than the average L’Anatra Gigante, to the point where I’d wonder if Palazzi and Pascucci would benefit from creating a secondary size grouping for such massive pipes. Even more impressive is the briar on this one, whose tight, “angel hair” straight grain is of a consistency rarely seen on pipes of such a stature.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
