Kristiansen Y Rusticated Saucer Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
Maurizio Fraternale’s Kristiansen pipes are among the most explicit representations of a certain trend in Italian handmade pipes of late, that being a turn away from certain established “Italian” styles in pipe design and toward something a little more “Danish.” Or, rather, they represent a novel synthesis of the two, though with a marked emphasis on the former. Fraternale’s tagline for his project is “Danish design, Italian taste,” and one can indeed see parts of each in this very unorthodox hybrid. The most striking elements of the design are distinctly Danish, those belonging to its squat, wide, saucer-like form, which likely plays on the famous “Ukulele” shapes of Sixten Ivarsson regarding its bowl (along with its many offspring across the globe), and with the stripped-down, neofunctionalism of Tom Eltang as regards its simple push fitment mouthpiece. The finishing is where things become more Italian, adding a partial, pebble-dash rustication to a shaping that has rarely—if ever—felt such a force.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
