Description
Founded by the architect Giorgio Imperatori in Pesaro, Italy, Il Ceppo is a workshop that produces high-end, handmade pipes, and a central figure in what has been called the “Pesaro school” of pipe design. This “school” was inaugurated in the 1970s with the emergence of workshops such as Imperatori’s Il Ceppo and Giacarlo Guidi’s Mastro de Paja, with each of its “members” being based in, or having some connection to, the town of Pesaro on Italy’s Adriatic coast. The Pesaro school is not simply a matter of shared location, however; there are common stylistic threads between member workshops and, quite often, individuals who have been part of more than one such workshop at different points in time.
In the case of this Il Ceppo, it’s a very “Pesaro” design, being a very beautiful, handcrafted rendition of a classic Anglo-French shape: the Lovat. Before the extravagance of the later Ser Jacopo and its offshoots and contemporaries, workshops such as Mastro de Paja and Il Ceppo established Italy as a place where one could find pipes not so different in style to their counterparts in England in France, but with a level of refinement less common in large-scale factory operations. A Lovat as polished and finely grained as this one requires an artisanal touch, at least if it is to be consistent—a quality that has helped keep the Il Ceppo workshop in business for nearly five decades.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
