In the world of pipes, Italy is famous for its workshops—institutions that operate at a smaller scale to factories, but in which expert artisans work tirelessly to create pipes entirely by hand. Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello is one of the oldest and most renowned of these workshops, and Castello pipes are often spoken of as Italy’s answer to England’s famous Dunhill pipes. Known for its equally high-grade smooth, sandblasted, and rusticated finishes, Castello’s legacy is felt not only in the continued success of the make itself, but also in the various, similarly high-end workshops founded by former Castello craftsmen, such as Caminetto, Radice, and Ascorti.
Castello’s Collection line sits near the very top of the workshop’s smooth finishes. Aside from the rusticated Natural Vergin line, Collection pipes typically wear Castello’s simplest, lightest staining so as to showcase the superior grain patterns necessary to qualify for such an accolade. This one is a beautifully flame grained example, having attained a 3 out of a possible 4 “k” sub-grade, and as such it is very fittingly rendered in one of Castello’s more unusual shapes. Though Castello pipes are frequently absent of a shape code, this looks to be to be the “215,” a somewhat uncommon Zulu-billiard hybrid that incorporates asymmetrical contours at both its rim and shank end (here extended via a Lucite army mount). This creates an interesting interplay between what one might call form and content, with the ripples of the briar patterns moving with and against those of the pipe’s shaping. On a last interesting note, this pipe was made in 1987, as evinced by its date code (“40,” referring to 40 years since Castello’s founding in 1947), but it comes from the very first year that such a dating practice was enacted, which was just a few years before Carlo Scotti’s passing in 1992.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and handling marks and chamber slightly over-reamed.
