Description
Caminetto was, and is to this day, a decisive figure in the history of Italy’s pipe workshop tradition. After spending time developing their skills in the Castello workshop, Guiseppe Ascorti and Luigi Radice left to found their own venture, which they named, “Caminetto.” Here, Ascorti and Radice were able to create their own now-classic shapes and finishes, such as the rusticated “Business,” and the carved, wax-drip “New Dear.”
Rusticated finishes are a genuine Italian institution, and this is no less so for high-grade Italian makes like Caminetto. Given that Caminetto itself was splintering off of former Castello employees, it was even more inevitable that Caminetto would have a rusticated finish in its portfolio. Thus was born the New Dear, which, at least in Caminetto’s first decades, was not entirely like the version of the Sea Rock Briar finish that Guiseppe Ascorti and Luigi Radice had carved during their time at Castello. Like Castello’s early Sea Rock Briar, the Business was less of a granular, pebble-dash aesthetic and more stony and weathered. The Business took this rocky dress and exaggerated its texture even further, creating something that, while still being mildly reminiscent of the Sea Rock Briar, was altogether a different beast. This stout brandy from around the 1960s/70s (based on the “bird in flight” Castello logo on the stem) is almost figural in its fidelity to the geological formations that inspired it, which makes for an all the better pairing with its amber-like Lucite stem.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
