BriarWorks represents the dream of many a pipe maker, being a workshop owned and stewarded by artisans whose mission is to produce affordable pipes of their own design. Founded in 2013 in Tennessee by American pipe making legends Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost, BriarWorks has gone from strength to strength in the years since, not least because of its ability to combine cutting-edge factory production techniques with high-grade artisan standards. Not unlike Pibe-Dan or Stanwell in Denmark, many a high-flying carver has been a part of the BriarWorks team, including contemporary greats such as Sam Adebayo, Micah Redmond, and Bill Shalosky.

Like its sister shape, the C141, the BriarWorks C142 takes inspiration from a shape so classic that it predates briar pipes by several centuries. For the latter, that shape is the Belge, which, like the former (a cutty rendition), emulates early briars that took inspiration from early modern clay pipes in their design, it is slender, elegant, and exceedingly lightweight, while still retaining a good chamber volume. This one is dressed in the workshop’s crimson contrast sandblast finish, which has been paired with a very appropriate, white acrylic mouthpiece.
