Description
Walt Cannoy first emerged as a major figure in the the North American pipe-making renaissance around the turn of the millennium. Originally an R&D mechanic, Cannoy carved and sold his first pipe in 1999, having been inspired by artisan pipe-makers as diverse as Preben Holm, Robert ‘Micoli’ Burns, and Joe Mariner. Cannoy would soon rise in the ranks of the North American artisan scene, becoming one of its premier high-grade carvers.
“Cardinal House” began as a side-project of Florida’s Walt Cannoy, before evolving into more of a division of separate lines within his output. The Cardinal House “Munn” and “Morton” lines, for example, wear rusticated finishes; “Hollingsworth” and “Langford,” on the other hand, are smooth pieces. This pencil shank stack Dublin belongs to the Munn line, named for Florida’s Munn Park, but it also holds an extra distinction. To mark the 10th anniversary of the debut of the Cardinal House series, Connoy produced a small number of commemorative pipes, of which this is one. In addition to being ultra lightweight, with its narrow shank reinforced with a stainless steel rod, it features a distinctive rustication that blends the aesthetics of the ring grain sandblast with Italo-American pebble-dash rustication.
