A common practice among pipe companies in the 20th century was the production of “seconds.” If you can think of a major pipe brand from the last 100 years, it’s almost certain that a seconds brand (or, in some instances, many seconds brands) came from the same production line. Essentially, seconds were pipes that were discovered to have minor, purely cosmetic, imperfections at one stage or another in the manufacturing process. Instead of throwing these perfectly good pipes away, companies used seconds brands to offer them at more affordable prices. This particular pipe is an example of such, having come from a factory in London, England.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and some slight scratches on the bowl. Beautifully grained, I must say—I was a little surprised that it was not a main-brand pipe, so it may simply have been a second for one of the higher-end factories, back in the day,
