Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Designed by Sixten Ivarsson in the 1970s, the Stanwell shape “11” is a one that has survived for a very long time in Stanwell’s catalogs, especially when one considers just how many shapes Stanwell has discontinued over the decades (including many that debuted after the “11” did). It’s also one of the longest surviving Sixten Ivarsson designs—and, one might even say, one of the longest surviving “Danish,” or “Scandinavian” shapes, given that the oldest Stanwell shapes to have remained in production are essentially traditional Anglo-French ones. Why has the “11” survived when so many other Stanwell shapes have not? Despite being rather “neoclassical” (as Ivarsson was wont to do) design, blending elements of the Anglo-French pot and diplomat shapes, it is nonetheless very distinctive, with a notably organic figure. From my own experience, it also smokes tremendously well, while having a great hand-feel. This one is from Stanwell’s Sterling line, which also happens to have debuted in the 1970s (though this make is more recent), being distinguished by its nicely thick, engraved sterling silver collars.
The condition is great. Some minor wear to the rim. This pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
