Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Designed by Sixten Ivarsson in the 1960s, the Stanwell shape “37” is a rare and rather unusual one to behold, even today. Along with other Ivarsson Stanwell shapes from the time, such as the “24” and the “70,” it is what we today would call a “volcano,” though one that had not entirely strayed from the Anglo-French tradition, bearing affinities with the volcanoes and diplomats of the latter. Like many of Ivarsson’s designs, it was somewhere in between the old and the emerging new, taking the basic building blocks of the former and rearranging them in a manner that was novel, but not entirely unfamiliar. In the decades that followed, volcano renditions would become a staple of Danish pipe making, and it is not difficult to see the influence of Ivarsson’s volcanoes, like this one, on the more “Danish” pipes that succeeded it. As for when this particular Stanwell was made, I’d estimate between the 1960s and 1970s, as it features the make’s abridged registration number but was in production until at least the mid-1970s, per Stanwell’s own catalogs (though it has been discontinued for a long while now).
The condition is good. Some darkening and minor scuffs on the rim and slight handling marks.
