Stanwell (Reg Era; c.1960s) 25 Sandblasted Speeding Dublin (Estate)

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Debuting around the 1960s, Stanwell’s number “25” Dublin must have either been very popular with the company, or with its designer, Sixten Ivarsson, as it was one of two near-identical shapes from that period. Both the “24” and the “25” were distinctive, oval shank Dublin renditions, with a pronounced forward lean that seemed to anticipate the more modern tradition of “speeding” designs in artisan pipe making. Unfortunately, both shapes disappeared in the early 1970s, with their shape codes being reused for two completely different designs, and the only reissue I’m aware of was the recent “Favorite” line, which included a “24” rendition. This particular example will have been made during the 1960s, or very early 1970s a the latest, and comes from Stanwell’s high-end Hand Made line from the period, being dressed in a rich, brown sandblast.

The condition is fair. Some inner rim charring, stem oxidation, and stem slightly over-buffed at the base.
