Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The Rustico was a rather unusual line of Stanwell pipes that was made back in the 2000s, prior to the closure of the company’s factory in Borup. While Stanwell had experimented very briefly with rusticated finishes in the past, the Rustico was, to my knowledge, the only Stanwell line to have ever featured a partially rusticated finish outside of a few German market Pipe of the Year releases. There are precedents in Danish pipe making, of course, but for Stanwell this was something of a novelty. This particular Rustico mixes deep, earthy hand-carvings with an otherwise light smooth polish, and is rendered in the distinctive, “217” horn-Dublin hybrid, a shape designed for Stanwell by the late Jess Chonowitsch.

The condition is great. Some minor inner rim darkening and very slight handling marks.
