Stanwell (c.1980s) Tivoli Sandblasted Brandy Canadian (Estate)

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Tivoli, also known as the Tivoli Gardens, is a historic amusement park in Copenhagen, Denmark. As such, I would assume that the Stanwell Tivoli was intended to play into that heritage, just as other pipe companies do with significant national locales. The pipes themselves were a modest affair; classic Stanwell shapes from the day, dressed in either a dark sandblast finish or a reddish-brown smooth one. As with a few other Tivoli-line Stanwells I’ve seen, this one does not feature a shape number, though it is recognizable as the “113,” a brandy-Canadian hybrid that has not been in production for many years. Judging by the lack of a trademark registration number and the presence of a thin, white, crowned “S” logo on the stem, I’d estimate this to be a 1980s make.

The condition is good. Minor rim darkening and some finish fading.
