Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The “Silver S” was, for a long time, one of the highest-grade Stanwells money could buy. Distinguished by their excellent grain patterns, pipes of a Silver S grade wore their titular foil-inlay stem logo long before Stanwell’s adoption of brass and other metal variations became the norm in the 1980s and 1990s, back during a time when just about every other Stanwell pipe was stamped with a simple, thin white script.

This particular pipe is a Silver S-grade example of Stanwell’s shape “21,” an uncommon and quite unusual one, all things considered. To date, there have been 4 separate designs bearing the “21” designation, as Stanwell historically had a habit of reusing shape codes once a particular model had been discontinued. This one appears to be the “21,” sold for a relatively brief during the 1970s. In profile, it looks to be a fairly simple bent billiard, or bent apple perhaps, but a closer inspection reveals a distinctive, paneled front face and tri-corner rim. The shape replaced the “Potato Sack” “21” of the 1960s (which in turn replaced the churchwarden “21” of the 1950s), and was, in turn, replaced by a Danish-style apple in the early 1980s, and to my knowledge, the “21” seen here has not appeared in Stanwell’s catalog since.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original (slightly flaked) bowl coating.
