Ser Jacopo S2 Partially Sandblasted Long Shank Poker Sitter (Estate)

Ser Jacopo is one of the most famous contemporary examples of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past—one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as perfectly as they looked.

One interesting thing about high-end Italian pipes is the distinct approach to sandblast finishes typically pursued by the workshops behind them. While Anglo-French sandblasts have long been dominated by impressively deep and rugged reliefs, their Italian counterparts are often instead more like the one on this Ser Jacopo. Instead of focusing wholly on horizontal ring grain, a lighter, but no less thorough, technique is used, resulting in an almost webbed, or knitted pattern around the bowl’s entirety. It makes for a very elegant pipe, especially when paired with the neoclassical forms that the Ser Jacopo workshop has, since its inception, pursued alongside its more avant-garde designs.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and minor handling marks.
