It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Inspired by the long, slender billiard renditions favored by American icon Bing Crosby, the Bing’s Favorite is one of Savinelli’s most popular lines. As the story goes, Bing was out golfing one day when he bumped into Herbert Merchant, of the old Merchant Service pipe company. Merchant was puffing away on his pipe as he golfed—a long, slender billiard made by his own company—and Crosby was enamored with it, especially given how easily it could be clenched while taking the perfect swing. The two struck up a friendship and, soon enough, Crosby had his signature pipe, courtesy of Mr Merchant. Long after both Merchant and Crosby had passed, Savinelli decided to launch their own homage to the fruits of that friendship, in the form of the Bing’s Favorite. This particular example is a relatively rare, light smooth finished rendition of Savinelli’s Bing, highlighting the bird’s-eye across either flank from its cross-cut turning.
The condition is fair. Some general finish fading and some scratches on the bowl.
