As with so many of today’s premier Italian workshop makes, the story of Rinaldo begins at Mastro de Paja. The latter was a workshop founded by Giancarlo Guidi (later of Ser Jacopo) and Giannino Spadoni (later of Fiamma di Re), which the brothers Elio and Guido Rinaldo worked for as teenagers in the 1970s. At the end of the 1980s, the two departed Mastro de Paja to found their own make under their surname. Thus, Rinaldo was born.
The Triade is one of the smooth finishes offered by the Rinaldo brothers by their pipes. Sometimes these finishes are light and natural, while other times, as in the case of this one, they take the guise of a deep contrast stain, though in both instances they are decidedly grain-forward, showcasing the inherent beauty of the briar underneath.
This one is a gorgeous example of the Triade series in action, and it’s also a rather unusual one when it comes to form. It is essentially a Dublin rendition, though a slightly faceted bowl and supple, horn-like figure that give it a distinctive edge. Dressed in a deep red finish over copious flame grain, the pipe is accented with a collar turned from sterling silver.
The condition is good. Some darkening and finish fading on the rim, and some slight scratches on the bowl.
