Description
As with so many of today’s premier Italian workshop makes, the story of Rinaldo begins at Mastro de Paja. The latter was a workshop founded by Giancarlo Guidi (later of Ser Jacopo) and Giannino Spadoni (later of Fiamma di Re), which the brothers Elio and Guido Rinaldo worked for as teenagers in the 1970s. At the end of the 1980s, the two departed Mastro de Paja to found their own make under their surname. Thus, Rinaldo was born.
Derived from the Ancient Greek for “stone,” the Lithos is the Rinaldo brothers’ contribution to that proud tradition within Italian pipe making of high-grade rusticated finishes. Though some Lithos series pipes are left more or less natural, most are, as in the case of this one, dressed in a sharp contrast finish, with a layered two-tone of reds and blacks that further accentuates the pipe’s hand-hewn relief. In this instance, the Lithos finish has been applied to a decidedly muscular bulldog rendition, with a bowl large enough to earn one of Rinaldo’s oversized grades, the (similarly Greek) Titania. Lastly, it’s been mounted with an offset sterling silver collar, whose shine adds an extra layer of contrast against the darker tones of the bowl.
The condition is very good. Slight inner rim charring.
