Reum Pipes Contrast Sandblasted Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe makers. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

Among the many things that stand out in Sean Reum’s work, the one that is perhaps most striking is his use of color. His finishes make liberal use of contrast stains, and his mouthpieces are fashioned from a striking variety of materials, including custom-cast resins, imitation ivory, and ebonite in just about every hue imaginable. This Danish brandy, for example, wears one of Reum’s signature contrast sandblasts, resulting in an especially earthy, ring grain relief, and is paired with a hand-cut mouthpiece of limited edition mustard-toned ebonite, evoking the amber and Bakelite popularly used on high-end pipes around a century ago.

The condition is very good. Some darkening and finish fading on the rim.
