Pipe companies will often collaborate with artisan pipe makers to come up with designs for their pipes. On occasion, figures from outside of the pipe world, particularly the arts, will also be enlisted to help create models that are modern and novel. One of the most successful inter-industry collaborations as far as pipes are concerned, however, involved an automobile manufacturer. Specifically, it involved the luxury automobile company Porsche, and the man behind the Porsche 911, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.

“Porsche Design” was originally a project spearheaded by the German pipe company Oldenkott, with Porsche providing designs and Oldenkott manufacturing them. These pipes were limited in number and featured a rather futuristic aluminum heat sink around the pipe’s (briar) bowl, a design component that Porsche, with his experience in automotive design, will have been intimately familiar with. Decades after the first run of Porsche Design pipes, the project was taken up once more by the Dutch pipe company Gubbels. As indicated by the branding, however, this one was made before Gubbels stepped in, back when Oldenkott was still responsible for Porsche Design pipes.
