Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson’s “Pub Pipe” series comprises some of the largest pipes offered by the Irish make. There is a long history behind them—longer than one might imagine, in fact—which stretches back to the 1980s, and then even further, to the 1890s. You see, back in the ’80s Peterson’s American distributors asked the company specifically for exceptionally large briars. These distributors also had the Oversized Peterson pipes of the late 19th and early 20th century in mind when making this request, which Peterson happily obliged. These new, near-magnum-sized pipes were officially known as “House Pipes,” though they were stamped with the words “HAND-MADE,” as they were more labor-intensive than most other Peterson pipes.
The House Pipe series included a few shapes, though the most important for this listing was an Oom Paul rendition incorporating Peterson’s famous System (comprised of a moisture reservoir, a graduated bore draft hole, and a P-Lip button) in its Deluxe guise (i.e., adding an aluminum condenser and a sterling silver army mount). The series continued for several decades and then, in the late 2010s, Peterson introduced the “Pub Pipe,” seen here. The Pub Pipe is almost identical to the House Pipe proper, but just a tad smaller (and I do mean a tad, as it is still very large).
