About this pipe:

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

While it is not currently in production, when it was, the idea behind Peterson’s Kinsale line was quite simple. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Peterson released its acclaimed Sherlock Holmes series, featuring an array of completely new shapes for the Irish make. But the Sherlock Holmes series has remained, since then, at the higher-end of Peterson’s output, and as such are a little pricier than other Peterson pipes. The Kinsale, by contrast, was a chance for pipe smokers to enjoy the now-iconic shapes of the Sherlock Holmes series, but in a more affordable form, while also featuring finishes and accents not present on the latter.

The XL12 was the Kinsale equivalent of the Sherlock Holmes Baskerville, a bulbous, bell-like full bent Rhodesian rendition, originally designed by Peterson’s legendary master craftsman, the late Paddy Larrigan.

The condition is very good. Minor rim darkening and slight finish fading.
