Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Like Dunhill and Barling’s, Peterson has a long and rich history with silver-mounted pipes, and is one of the few companies to still employ master silversmiths to turn and mount such precious metal adornments entirely in-house at its Dublin premises. Sterling silver spigots have been part of Peterson’s catalog since the early 1900s and remain at the high-end of the company’s output, though there are few pipes quite as high-end as the Natural Spigot. Across Peterson’s many lines and series, the Natural finish is reserved exclusively for bowls with perfect, consistent graining. Only a small fraction of bowls turned annually qualify for this distinction, and fewer still are subsequently fitted with sterling silver spigot mounts. As such, the Natural Spigot is far more uncommon than the majority of Peterson’s other pipes, and when one does become available, it commands a hefty premium. This one is an exceptionally beautiful specimen, with bird’s-eye covering either side of the bowl and tight cross-grain running along the entirety of its fore, aft, topside, and underside.
The condition is good. Rim darkening and some finish fading.
