Peterson 1998 House Pipe Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson has a long history of making extraordinarily large pipes. One might even consider the company as an “early adopter” when it comes to such, having offered a limited production of “Oversize” pipes since the end of the 19th century. Today, Peterson’s largest pipes fall under the House Pipe series, one that was formally introduced around the 1980s, but whose designs have precedents established long before that inauguration. This particular House Pipe is Peterson’s largest currently offered billiard shape, though it was modeled on similarly sturdy “O,” or “Oversized,” billiard renditions from the 1890s. It is certainly a big pipe, with a chamber to match, and it is beautifully carved, with bird’s-eye patterns covering each of its broad flanks.

The condition is good. Some inner rim darkening and a few superficial scratches on the bowl.
