Papa Bear’s Pipes are made by North American artisan Tim Beaumont. Beaumont has been making pipes since 2018, cultivating a unique style that isn’t afraid to mix and match design elements and to create something completely out of the ordinary.

Back in the 19th century, all manner of materials were explored as a means for crafting pipes, including a vast variety of wood species. As we all know, briar ultimately won out, and it would take another 100 years or so until pipe makers began bringing other, more exotic woods into their designs, this time in an ornamental fashion. This slightly long shanked brandy from Tim Beaumont, for example, includes a cap turned from a very distinctive genre of materials, grouped under the label of “spalted.” Many trees are host to other organisms over their lifetime, such as fungi, that affect the way their grain patterns as they grow, producing beautiful, random striations and color variations in the wood itself. Given the chance nature of this mutation, spalted woods are coveted for their decorative uses, including in pipe making.
