Description

Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.

While Erik Nording’s freehands come in a vast variety of finishes, the Grain series is reserved for smooth pipes with excellent briar patterning. In a sense, these pipes are the closest of all of Erik Nording’s contemporary freehands to those of the “Danish Fancy,” the style of freehand pipes that Nording, along with figures such as Preben Holm and Viggo Nielsen, helped establish 60 years ago. Their shaping approach is one of “chasing the grain,” with the forms reflecting a “dialogue” between the carver and their briar, with the intention of finding a form that best expresses the latter’s natural beauty and patterning. In the case of the Orange grain series, these pipes are then finished in a deep, orange-red contrast finish, which helps further accentuate the vertical striations of high-quality plateaux briar.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
