Description
Originally a science teacher in California, Nathan Armentrout began making pipes in 2009 and has since emerged as one of North America’s most talented, high-grade artisan pipe-makers. Inspired by Denmark’s legendary carvers, Nathan’s designs continue the legacy of the Danish pipe-making movement into the present day and expand that legacy through his own unique interpretations of the masters of old.
Having this pipe from Nathan Armentrout reminds me of something I think I’ve said before, but nevertheless bears repeating: there are as many approaches to the Dublin as there are artisan pipe makers. In the old Anglo-French shape charts, the properties of a “Dublin” shape were relatively well defined and consistent. Following the birth of “freehand” pipe making in post-war England and Scandinavia, however, the boundaries of what made a pipe a “Dublin” or not became increasingly permeable. This black blast Dublin from Nathan Armentrout is an excellent example of just how unorthodox a Dublin can be while still being recognizable within that concept. With its long, lune-shaped shank and boxy side profile, it is a little reminiscent of the Dublins carved by Poul Ilsted, though with much softer edges and distinctive, dress color palette.
