Description
The Moretti make was originally founded by Igino Moretti in 1968, in the small, but historic, Italian town of Recanati. Igino Moretti had previously been a craftsman at Hully Briar, one of the many pipe factories that had held a presence in Recanati since the 19th century. After departing Hully and taking a brief hiatus from pipe making, Igino Moretti created his own brand, Moretti Recanati, which produced pipes under its own name and as a contractor for other brands requiring high-quality Italian pipes. In more recent decades, Moretti Recanati was inherited by Igino Moretti’s son-in law, Marco Biagini, who later simplified the name of the brand to “Moretti.” Today, Moretti pipes are made by hand by Biagini in his workshop, which is situated just across the street from what was once the home one of Italy’s most famous writers, the Recanati Romanticist Giacomo Leopardi.
Marco Biagini’s Moretti pipes differ quite significantly from those of his father in law, with the most obvious difference being the sheer muscle each possesses. Biagini carves Moretti pipes in a variety of styles, but they’re rarely without a great deal of heft, making them both beautiful and sturdy smokers. This one is a stout, slightly bent apple rendition, with a near-naked, partially rusticated finish and a camouflage acrylic mouthpiece.
The condition is excellent. Some very minor finish fading on the rim, but only lightly and gently smoked.
