At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but some of the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

In addition to their functional improvements, one thing that we’ve always been interested in when it comes to our meerschaum pipes is expanding our design portfolio. In particular, we’re always looking to including new shapes that either aren’t commonly associated with the medium, or which have been transformed in the last half century via the briar artisan scene.

In the case of this one, the idea was of pursuing an uncommon design not because it’s new, but quite the opposite—because it’s a very old one. The Belge, or Belgian, is like the cutty, in that it started out as a popular design for clay pipes, before hopping over to other mediums, such as meerschaum and briar. With clays, Belge and cutty shapes originated as a result of constraints on the medium, both in manufacture and use, but they were aesthetically pleasing enough to continue being made long after the heyday of clay. This Deluxe is based on the meerschaum Belge renditions of the 19th and early 20th century, for example, right down to its imitation-amber acrylic mouthpiece.

This pipe comes with a custom-fitted clam-shell hard case.
