Lothar Schirwitz 11 Partially Rusticated Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm

Description

Lothar Schirwitz was a German pipe maker, and the man credited with much of the innovation and success that took place at Design Berlin in the later 20th century. Design Berlin was, as the name suggests, a German pipe-making company—and was, until its closing, the number two best-selling German pipe make after Vauen. Founded in 1948 as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann by Hubert Hartmann, the company adopted the name Design Berlin and the lowercase ‘db’ logo in 1975 as part of a modernization push. In 2019, Design Berlin finally closed after over 70 years in continuous operation.

Here we find one of Schirwitz’s own pipes, putting on full display the Danish influences that inspired his revamp of Design Berlin’s various models. Taking the form of a tall, stacked, bent egg, it features much of the shaping cues seen in Danish pipes, as well as the use of partial rustication and a two-tone acrylic mouthpiece to add a unique aesthetic to the overall piece.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
