Description
Lane Limited was founded by German Jewish refugee Herman Lane in the 1930s, and soon rose to become a veritable empire in the tobacco industry. Drawing on a wealth of experience as the manager of a tobacco company in his native Dresden, Lane set up shop on Park Avenue in New York, out of which his new Lane Limited venture was based. Lane himself was a committed pipe smoker with era-defining taste, being the first importer of Charatan pipes to the United States and, later, one of the main distributors of Preben Holm’s pipes through the Ben Wade make.
Since its early beginnings Lane Limited is a company that has, as one might say, had “a finger in every pie.” Or, perhaps, “in every pipe,” might be better, given its habit of sourcing fine briars from all over the world for its customers, both during Herman Lane’s time and in the decades since. This one, for example, is a finely grained, diamond shank bent billiard from Italy, with a distinctive, marbled acrylic mouthpiece and ivory-toned accent.
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and some small scratches around the bowl.
