Description
Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
If my dating is correct, this particular Kaywoodie is from their Oversized line, produced in the 1940s and 50s. These pipes were some of the most expensive pipes Kaywoodie offered at the time, with a retail price equivalent to several hundred dollars today. Simply stamped “Hand Made”, as this one is, these pipes were large, hand-carved, and came in a variety of shapes and finishes. This wide pot appears to be a taper variant of the Oversize “Samson” shape, and judging by the spectacular briar patterns and stain it exhibits, it also looks to be the line’s high-grade “Virgin Finish Specimen Grain” grade. As was typically the case, the pipe features Kaywoodie’s renowned four-hole stinger (the Drinkless) and threaded fitment (the Synchro-Stem).
This Kaywoodie also happens to be completely unsmoked. I expect it will be a rare, genuine treat for collectors.
