Gamboni Contrast Sandblasted Cutty Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description
Italy’s Gian Maria Gamboni is a rather elusive figure within the pipe world, something that has likely contributed to his cult following. He first took up pipe making in the mid-2000s, having been inspired by the pipes of Paolo Becker and Massimo Musico. At the time, Becker & Musico operated a store in Gamboni’s home city of Rome, and when the former parted ways, Gamboni was hired by Musico and became part of the workshop that produced the latter’s Foundation line. Gamboni would later begin making pipes under his own name, achieving considerable success both in Italy and abroad, including in the United States and even Denmark. In recent years, however, Gamboni has been far less active, and at one point appeared to have stepped back from pipe making altogether. This is certainly true for his Gamboni pipes, though it appears that, instead of retiring, Gamboni himself remains part of the Musico workshop, where he continues to craft pipes under the latter make alongside the Musico family.
Despite Gamboni’s continued labors at the Musico workshop, there are still substantial differences between the design philosophy of Gamboni and Musico pipes. Musico pipes are eminently classical, typically being expertly handmade renditions of traditional shapes, whereas Gamboni pipes are (or were) far more modern and very unique. This cutty-egg hybrid is strongly representative of Gamboni’s personal design philosophy, with its juxtaposition of slender and bulbous figures and the artisan’s unmistakable, deep contrast sandblast.
The condition is great. Some very slight inner rim charring.
