Ed Burak Connoisseur Smooth Hawkbill Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Known as the “dean of American pipe designers” Ed Burak was not a pipe maker per se. Rather, Burak was someone who worked with the master carvers of his time to bring his distinct ideas of what a pipe could be to life. As the owner of the Connoisseur Pipe Shop, Burak designed freehand pipes so singularly representative of pipe making as an artistic endeavor, that many of the resulting works ended up in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The hawkbill was a shape that Ed Burak returned to quite a few times during the course of his career and, considered alongside other staples in his output, it’s not difficult to see why. With its unusual, inverted figure and rollercoaster curvature, it’s a shape that one could imagine Burak inventing himself, had it not already been a staple of pipe design for long before he’d entered the scene. In keeping with Burak’s aesthetic philosophy, this rendition wears no stain or dyes, and bears no fills, having been left natural and given a light wax polish so as to let the form speak for itself.

This pipe is completely unsmoked. There are a couple of very small imperfections on the bowl, though that’s quite typical of Burak’s work and not something he took issue with.
