Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The Bruyere was the very first finish available for Dunhill pipes, but it is also the finish that has changed the most since it debuted around 1910. Which iteration one favors is purely a matter of preference, since the Bruyere has always been a high-end pipe, but it is nonetheless interesting how the specific hues of Dunhill’s flagship smooths have been tweaked to suit the pipe smokers of a given epoch. From the walnut tones of its early decades, to glimmering garnet midcentury guise, to the more reserved, merlot finish of the 1990s onward, it would seem that there is a Bruyere for just about everyone. I’m personally quite partial to the latter, seen here, as it would seem to be the perfect fit—at least, in my mind—for a more understated, 21st century luxury.
The condition is very good. Stem slightly over-buffed and a few handling marks.
