Custom Made Natural Grain Extra Large Smooth Lovat (Estate)

A common practice among pipe companies in the 20th century was the production of “seconds.” If you can think of a major pipe brand from the last 100 years, it’s almost certain that a seconds brand (or, in some instances, many seconds brands) came from the same production line. Essentially, seconds were pipes that were discovered to have minor, purely cosmetic, imperfections at one stage or another in the manufacturing process. Instead of throwing these perfectly good pipes away, companies used seconds brands to offer them at more affordable prices.

This looks to be one of those pipes, from a French make. Interestingly, its nomenclature indicates it as having been turned from Algerian briar, which was famously high-quality and sought after around the mid-20th century. Aside from a couple of fills, this near-magnum sized Lovat rendition is indeed a testament to the remarkable graining of that Algerian root.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening, chamber slightly over-reamed, and a couple of worn out fills.
