Description
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’
For many decades now, Castello’s Trademark line has been defined by a ruby red finish reminiscent of old English briars, though with a much more “Italian” approach to form. This one looks to be the shape 74 stack, or chimney (Castello rarely stamps the shape code on their pipes), a tall and slender design animated by glossy cross-grain. Interestingly, this Castello features a stem cut not from the standard black Lucite Castello is most known for, but a subtle amethyst-toned one, which complements the hue of the bowl surprisingly nicely.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and finish fading.
