About this pipe:
In the world of pipes, Italy is famous for its workshops—institutions that operate at a smaller scale to factories, but in which expert artisans work tirelessly to create pipes entirely by hand. Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello is one of the oldest and most renowned of these workshops, and Castello pipes are often spoken of as Italy’s answer to England’s famous Dunhill pipes. Known for its equally high-grade smooth, sandblasted, and rusticated finishes, Castello’s legacy is felt not only in the continued success of the make itself, but also in the various, similarly high-end workshops founded by former Castello craftsmen, such as Caminetto, Radice, and Ascorti.
Castello has an array of signature, era defining house finishes, from the pebble-dash Sea Rock Briar, to the sandblasted Old Antiquari, to the fumed, smooth polished Aristocratica. Most often these finishes are the defining feature of the series Castello pipes are grouped into, meaning that—for exampel—a Sea Rock Briar will be fully (or almost fully) rusticated, an Old Antiquari will be fully sandblasted, and an Aristocratica will be fully smooth.
There are exceptions, however. Some rusticated or sandblasted Castellos have smooth-polished rims, for instance. Less commonly, a pipe from a smooth-polished series will feature a sandblasted or rusticated shank. And, on very rare occasions, the Castello workshop will employ distinctive dual finishes for the main body of a pipe’s bowl. This particular Castello is among the most unusual I’ve seen in the latter vein. Though it belongs to the typically smooth-polished “Castello” series, it has something of a “Jekyll and Hyde” motif going on, as the pipe’s right flank wears Castello’s iconic Sea Rock Briar rustication. It’s a bold pairing, for sure, but as one expects from a workshop like Castello, it works surprisingly well, and is not without its elegance.
This pipe is completely unsmoked. A couple of scratches on the left side of the bowl, though nothing major. This pipe comes with its original box and sleeve.
