Description
Ashton is an English pipe brand created by William Ashton Taylor, a former Dunhill pipe-maker who left Dunhill in the 1980s to make pipes under his own name. Along with other pipe-makers such as Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall and Les Wood of Ferndown, Ashton emerged as part of a new wave of high end, hand made British pipes in the late 20th century.
Ashton’s Brindle series tends to follow a similar design philosophy to the workshop’s Pebble Grain, with a key difference being the style of the mouthpiece. Like the Pebble Grain (itself a challenger to the old Dunhill Shell Briar), the Brindle features a craggy, burgundy sandblast finish, with just a tad more color than the former by way of a secret contrast finishing method. The most striking difference, however, is typically found in the Brindle’s namesake, that being the material used for its mouthpieces. “Brindle” is often used interchangeably with “Cumberland,” as both are multi-colored—brindled—materials formed through the layering of different resins during casting. Ashton’s Brindle, on the other hand, is more apposite, featuring mouthpieces of various stripes, such as the black and orange seen here on this signature, silver-mounted Ashton calabash shape.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original leather sleeve.
