Aldo Velani Firmata Sabbiata Sandblasted Panel Dublin w/ Silver Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates
Out of stock
Description
Aldo Velani pipes are made by Cesare Barontini at the latter’s factory in Italy. Originally, Aldo Velani was conceived by Mastercraft to be a new Italian make for the American market, as all of Mastercraft’s other pipes at the time were of English or French origin. Mastercraft partnered with Barontini, and thus the Aldo Velani make was born. More recently, Aldo Velani was acquired by Mitchell Thomas, with production—still by Barontini—recommencing after 2008.
From what I’ve seen, the Firmata line from Aldo Velani was handmade, with each being a little different from the last. This one’s design is certainly different, combining a six-sided panel Dublin, a pronounced “heel,” a red and silver collar, a rather ornate saddle stem, and a near-black dark sandblast finish. It’s like something you’d get if you crossed a freehand from the Charatan workshop (notably, a “Keel” shape), a Danish Dublin from someone like Jess Chonowitsch or Poul Ilsted, an English “dress” pipe, and dash of Italian extravagance for good measure. It’s a lot of ingredients for a single pipe, though I’d say it turned out quite well.
The condition is very good. Some general wear to the rim, though nothing major.
