Description
Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own.
One thing that has long set the Rovera family’s Ardor make apart from their Italian contemporaries is the incorporation of distinctly non-Italian designs when making those pipes. It is not uncommon, for example, to find examples of Ardors taking the form of the English squat bulldog, the Danish egg, and, as in the case of this one, the disc blowfish associated with both Danish and Japanese pipe making. This one leans a little toward the latter style, possessing a slight asymmetry and incorporating a number of folds and ridges across its bowl. The finish, on the other hand, is very much the Rovera’s own, the Marte, a smooth polished contrast stain intended to evoke the hues of earth’s neighboring red planet.
This pipe is completely unsmoked. It comes with its original box.
