Description
W.O. Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
Danish pipe design has always had a strong English influence, so it isn’t surprising to see something a little more “classical” from the W.O. Larsen workshop, as is the case here. But, being a Danish pipe, it’s also not surprising to see a design that plays with tradition a little, blending elements from different shapes so as to create something that is, nonetheless, different. With its brandy-like bowl and Lovat-like shank and stem, this W.O. Larsen shape 60 keeps one foot either side of the war, much like the earliest Danish pioneers did.
The condition is fair. Rim darkening, finish fading, and some handling marks.
