Vauen Olaf 1837 Smooth Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm
Out of stock
Description
Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.
Vauen’s Olaf line is a rather unique one, though for a quite subtle reason. To my knowledge, it is the only major line of pipes thus far to have had matching matte finishing applied to both its stummel and its stem. Thus, while matte finishes on the briar part of a pipe are by no means new, the Olaf reduces the contrast in sheen between it and the stem by pairing them in a similar, finely textured manner. On the other hand, Vauen is widely renowned for its innovative approaches to pipe design, so I shouldn’t be too surprised. This one is rendered in the make’s slightly Danish 1837 apple shape, with its reserved appearance broken up just slightly by the brighter hues of a more conventionally finished briar accent at the base of its stem.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
