Description

Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.

As is the case with many of the 20th and 21st century’s most established pipe companies, Vauen’s portfolio includes a special, limited edition Pipe of the Year, or Jahrespfeife, which it has released annually since 1993. In keeping with the company’s design philosophy, Vauen’s Pipe of the Year models are innovative and highly distinctive, to an extent that is perhaps only rivaled by the Danish pipe company Stanwell. The 2014 model, seen here, was a very unorthodox take on the hawkbill shape, combining it with elements from freehand carving, including grooves around the bowl that both look good and provide for an easy grip. This one wears a dress finish, with a sterling silver collar engraved with the Vauen logo.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, having come to us in a batch of new old stock pipes from a shop closure in Europe. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
