Description

Tom Eltang made his first pipe from a Pibe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pipe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of hand made pipes.

It is not without irony that so many of the most notable contributors to the “Danish” style of pipe making feel most at home with far more traditional, Anglo-French designs. Figures like Sixten Ivarsson, Sven Knudsen, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Jens “Tao” Nielsen, Poul Ilsted, and, of course, Tom Eltang have been responsible for creating innumerable unorthodox and unusual pipes, pipes which have, in turn, served as templates for subsequent artisans to build on, cementing a conception of “Danish design” and sealing it with a name. Yet if you asked one of those names what their idea of a perfect pipe would be, or which pipes they themselves smoke, the answer is less likely to be an Olifant, or a Walrus, or an Eskimo, than a fairly classical Dublin or apple rendition. Tom Eltang is arguably most famous for his poker shapes, and of all the shapes he works with, the poker is the greatest in terms of sheer number. But Eltang also loves his billiards, pots, and cutties, and, as well as his long shank shapes, like the lumberman and the Lovat. This pipe is an example of the latter; a simple, Lovat rendition in a crisp, but modest dress. Engineered to perfection, it’s lightweight, easy to handle, and will undoubtedly smoke like a dream—just as the perfect pipe should do.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original leather sleeve.
